God Gives Us “Subway Tokens”

I was talking to one of my teachers one day and she told me something that really resonated with me. She was applying it to her particular situation, but it can really be applied to anyone’s life.

“It’s like a subway token.” She said.

I responded, “What?” thinking I heard her wrong.

She, again, said that it was like a subway token and that God has his own timing. Okay, so what did that have to do with a subway token? She went on to explain a sermon that her pastor shared at church one Sunday.

You know how you have to have a token to get on a subway? You don’t want to lose it right? So if a parent brings their 6-year-old to the subway, they most likely aren’t going to give them the token far in advance because they’d probably loose it. Instead, they would hold it and give it to their child right before getting on the subway. She said that this was like God when he gives us things we need at the last minute. We spend so much time worrying about the things we need in life or about how we don’t know what to do after ______ happens, but God’s just waiting to give us the “token” at the right time.

In reality though, everything always ends up working out. We’re still here. Living, breathing. God never puts us through something we can’t handle. And when we’re about to reach the point of complete desperation, He gives us hope and peace. We may have to be patient sometimes, but He is always there for us without fail.

A Bible verse that goes along well with this is Deuteronomy 31:6, “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” In essence, don’t mistake God’s patience for his absence. His timing may not line up with our timing, but we just have to have faith that things will work out through him. As the quote says, “God has perfect timing; never early, never late. It takes a little patience and it takes a lot of faith, but it’s worth the wait.”

Although it’s certainly not easy sometimes, we have to trust that God is waiting for the right time to give us what we need and it very well may be at the last minute. Maybe the mission trip I mentioned in the last post was a last minute “token” or maybe this teacher that I’m talking about came into my life and was one of God’s “tokens” when she helped me a lot through hard times.

It all just goes back to the trust we have in God. We have to trust that everything will turn out okay in the end. He truly wants the best for us. He doesn’t want us to lose our “token” so we are able to get on the subway. ❤

  1. Hi, very well written and interesting. The coin analogy makes sense and true, His Timing is Not our Timing. Trust the Lord.

    Wait[e] on the Lord;
    Be of good courage,
    And He shall strengthen your heart;
    Wait, I say, on the Lord!

    Love you.
